Book Review: Change Maker by Dr. John Berardi, PhD

blog book review Apr 29, 2021

If you’re trying to figure out how to turn your passion for health and fitness into a career that not only pays the bills, but has purpose and makes a positive impact in people’s lives, then look no further than this book.

It was SO good - I listened to the audiobook AND THEN I bought the ‘book book’ (as my mother-in-law says). I love when audiobooks are recorded by the author. John’s voice is very easy to listen to, his cadence is great, and he has some pretty funny stories too!

Think of John as your own personal business coach. He maps out exactly how to find your best clients, turn them into raving fans and define your life on your own terms. His six “Career Steps” are refreshingly clear and actionable. They’re built on the idea that you have to get to know yourself so well that you can articulate your purpose, abilities and values with pinpoint precision.

This book is great for people at any career stage, but it can be a godsend if you’re just starting out. In fact, I’ve gifted it to every student in my 90-Day Clinical Business Blueprint course, as well as every intern that’s ever worked with me. It’s that good!

Here’s one of my favourite quotes from the book:

The world’s best professionals are willing to do everything it takes to understand their clients, which starts with asking great questions and then deeply, actively listening to the answers without any agenda of their own.

I think you’ll like how the book is divided into two parts: one is inward focussed (self reflection), the other is outward focussed (looking outside yourself). John offers plenty of insightful pro-tips on how to sort yourself out so that you can show up well for your clients. As well, he teaches you how to set yourself up for success by listening carefully to your clients’ needs and then delivering exactly what they want.

As a soon-to-be Change Maker I’m confident you’ll find this book to be incredibly useful and inspiring. I’ll leave you with my biggest takeaways for building an enviable career of substance, security and sustainability:

  • Find the clients and the kind of work that you enjoy doing *so much* that time just slips away
  • Identify what your clients really want and deliver it - every. single. time.
  • Protect what is arguably your biggest and most valuable asset - your reputation
  • Make more money - raise your rates, teach to larger groups, minimize your contact time
  • Craft a continuing education blueprint that will guide you throughout your career

This is a powerful guide for anyone looking to find joy in their health, fitness and wellness business. It truly is change-making!
